British Game Assurance has launched a free-to-access Associate scheme for any shoot that wants to take the first steps towards self-assurance.
Defra has publicly called upon all shooting interests to sign up to BGA and this new initiative removes all the barriers to participation so every shoot can play their part in safeguarding the future of our community.
Defra Minister Lord Benyon’s call for all shooting interests to register with British Game Assurance to ensure the future of shooting has coincided with yet another season of uncertainty, as two years of Covid and Brexit are followed by Avian Influenza and the implications of the war in Ukraine.
The shooting community is being asked to embrace assurance to secure its own future, at a time in which money is scarce.
In response, BGA is overhauling its Associate scheme to allow all shoots complying with the Code of Good Shooting Practice and the Wild Game Guide to register for free.
Shoots taking up this opportunity can advertise their shooting as Associated with BGA, allowing them to continue to sell shooting through BGA agents and can be confident that they have taken the first steps towards a self-regulating sector.
Shoots wishing to sell BGA-assured game, either through their own outlets or through one of the rapidly growing number of supermarkets, restaurants and caterers insisting on this, will need to register for full Certified BGA Assurance.
Aim to Sustain, the coalition of major shooting organisations including BASC, GWCT, Countryside Alliance and NGO, is recommending registering your shoot with BGA if you supply birds to game processors, because the reassurance BGA provides to consumers is “vital to the future of our sector”.
BGA is the only assurance scheme available to the game sector, the only one being called for by Government and the only one supporting the sale of game meat into the market.
British Game Assurance CEO Liam Stokes said: “Defra has told us what we need to do; we need as many shoots as possible to register with BGA.
“We have had to think about how we can deliver this at a time when shoots are under enormous pressure and uncertainty. We believe that broadening access to our Associate scheme, and making it free to participate, is the fairest way to make sure everyone can participate in the self-regulation.
“We are game shooting’s only Assurance scheme and the demand for Assured Game will only grow. For everyone else, the option to Associate with BGA means every shoot can do their bit for the future of shooting.”
